An individual’s personality is created through our reactions
to our uncertainties. Many of my pieces signify a fear or apprehension of the
situations I tend to find myself in and I seek now to communicate brief impressions
of what I have observed and encountered. Through silversmithing, I have found
an outlet to realize my imperfections and overcome my uncertainties.
My work reflects a fascination with the untouched and uninfluenced aspects of
the earth’s materials and how they can be manipulated. Over time, those
materials become distorted and imperfect, but always still hold some type of
recognizable form. Although I attempt to stay true to the physical and untreated
aspects of the materials, I try to add a separate technique and process to not
only call the piece my own, but to show its hand-made qualities.
Because my training began with an emphasis on craft, I am increasingly passionate
about the power of metalsmithing as a craft. It is unfortunate that craftsmanship
is being slowly overrun by the conceptual and design era. Concept in itself
can be a premise for beautiful work and be part of the creative process but
without technical craftsmanship, perfection cannot be attained. I cannot say
though that all beautifully crafted pieces are without a conceptual background,
every piece is born from an idea in an artist’s mind. I hope to pass onto
the future generation my love of quality craftsmanship, aesthetic distinctiveness
and technical ability.
